Bukkehorn
The bukkehorn is an instrument with deep traditions in the Nordic countries. Initially, the horn was used as a signaling instrument by shepherds and warriors, among others. Gradually, finger holes began to be drilled so that simple melodies could be played. Then the horn also became suitable as an entertainment instrument. The bukkehorn has a very unique sound, with a melancholy that no other instrument can match.
The bukkehorn is available in different sizes and keys. The availability of different horn varies, and the selection of sizes will vary. Every bukkehorn are completely unique. Some are heavy-blown and some are light-blown. I try my best to make the horns as light-blown as possible. Often, small, light horns can be more heavy-blown than deep ones. The large horn are more rare and difficult to obtain, hence the higher price.
Horns are usually tuned with five notes and can be tuned to your liking. Usually, they are tuned in a pure minor scale.
Example: A horn with a root note of G will normally be tuned as follows: G - A - Bb - C - D - Eb. If you have good enough lip muscles, you can also overblow. Then you will be able to play the octave or a seventh step. This varies from horn to horn.
Even though the scale is tuned as in the example, you can make different grip variations and lower the pitch with your left hand so that you can play chromatically. This of course requires practice.
In order for the bukkehorn to be adjusted to the player in the best possible way, I recommend visiting my workshop in Tolga to have the finger holes placed in the suiting of the player's hand. I am often out and about, so it is possible to arrange to meet elsewhere in the country.
